She completed her Ph.D. studies in inorganic chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe (now KIT) under Prof. Reinhold Tacke. After completing them in 1991, she joined the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen as a postdoctoral research associate under Prof. Manfred Eigen. There, she shifted her research focus to biocatalytic enzyme activities and began independent research on the "Directed Evolution of Enzymes." She applied this knowledge during her employment at Evotec Biosystems AG from 1999 to 2000. In 2001, she moved to the University of Leipzig as a junior research group leader. She received her habilitation from the Technical University of Braunschweig in 2004, after which she joined the faculty of chemistry and chemical biology at TU Dortmund University.
